Orchard Beach State Park Campground Review

We traveled to Orchard Beach State Park Campground in Manistee, Michigan in April, 2019. The weekend was chilly but the views were absolutely amazing. When we arrived on Friday morning we had the place almost completely to ourselves!

Our Campsite at Orchard Beach State Park:

We camped on site 39 which was a specious pull-thru site. There was plenty of room for our fifth wheel, truck, and even my sister’s car who was visiting us. There are several pull-thru sites in the same area and they all feature crushed stone pads and wonderful views of Lake Michigan.

The sites on the other side of the campground don’t have the same views because the lake is obstructed by a bluff.  Many of the sites are un-level throughout the park so we’d recommend checking the DNR site before selecting your campsite and coming prepared with blocks to level your camper.

Orchard Beach State Park Campground

Overall, we really liked this campground. There were many mature trees throughout the park that would provide some great shade on a hot summer day. The views of Lake Michigan are really incredible and made for a morning stroll with our dog much more enjoyable.  The sunsets were also AMAZING!

The sites at Orchard Beach State Park Campground did look like they were fairly close together so I imagine it could feel crowded when every campsite is full. As you can see from our pictures, we were one of only a handful of campers in the park at the time we visited so it felt totally spacious during our trip!

Unfortunately, you can no longer access the beach at Orchard Beach State Park campground due to erosion. This wasn’t a big deal for us since it was 40 degrees during the day. There are several beaches within driving distance of the park. If you’re looking for a campground with great access to Lake Michigan, check out Mears State Park in Pentwater.

The bath houses were both quite dated but the one that was open was clean and well-maintained despite its age. The playgrounds were also dated and consisted of the basic slides and swings. The dump station appeared to be very new and featured several lanes.

What’s Around Orchard Beach State Park

Downtown Manistee features shopping and restaurants perfect for a rainy day. There are also several larger stores for any supplies you might need during your stay. We were able to do our grocery shopping at Meijer rather than pack too much ahead of our trip.

The Little River Casino is also located a few miles away if you’re feeling lucky or just need a rainy-day activity.
