Hoffmaster State Park

PJ Hoffmaster State Park Campground Review

UPDATE: We visited Hoffmaster State Park again in May, 2018. It was our first visit to the park in the Spring and it was another fantastic trip. We camped on site 27, which backed up to the creek. Our kids loved playing in the creek and even ventured in despite the cooler temps! We also spent lots of time on the playground. It was great to visit when it was less crowded. New photos are included below.

Camp the Mitten member, Andy was kind enough to share this review! We’ve also visited this park and agree with his comments completely!

P.J. Hoffmaster State Park in Muskegon is a great place to camp if you enjoy both the Lake Michigan beach and the woods.  We have camped there many times, in many different sites.  It is a family favorite and a must-do every summer

Our Campsite at Hoffmaster State Park

There are two main loops at Hoffmaster, the north and the south, separated by Little Black Creek.  All campsites are in a wooded setting and some even provide some decent privacy.  Compared to others in the state park system, most of the sites at Hoffmaster are spacious and roomy.  Our favorite group of sites are the ones in the southern loop, right along the creek, numbers 1-34.  When the Lake Michigan waters are cold (which they usually are!) the kids and dogs can take a dip in the warmer creek waters which has a sandy bottom.  It’s a great spot to open up your favorite beverage in your favorite chair and dip your feet in the water directly behind your campsite.  The southern loop is also closest to the Lake Michigan access.

The Campground at Hoffmaster State Park

The Lake Michigan Beach is pure sand and absolutely beautiful, and is for campers only, making it less congested.  Little Black Creek runs through the campground, along the beach for a stretch before emptying into the big lake.  High Sand dunes offer great trails to hike and provide stunning views (especially at sunset).

Hoffmaster State Park offers an outstanding playscape area for children, situated in-between both loops.  The access to Lake Michigan from the campground is in-between sites 34 and 36.  It’s about a ¼ mile hike carved out of a sand dune, most of which you can ride your bike until it gets too sandy.  On a rainy day, or just because, you can visit the Gillette Visitor Center at Hoffmaster’s day use area.  The kids love to visit this place to see live reptiles (frogs, snakes, etc.), learn about the history of the sand dunes, visit the small museum and participate in ranger programs.

The Area Around Hoffmaster State Park

Hoffmaster State Park is located near Muskegon where you can find almost anything you might need very close to the park – restaurants, stores, you name it! Hoffmaster is also close to Michigan’s Adventure if you’re looking for some added excitement in your trip. It is also close the quaint, resort style town of Grand Haven.  A mile or two outside of the park’s entrance is Whippi-Dip, an excellent place for ice cream! Yum!
