We’ve visited South Higgins Lake State Park a several times in the last few years. Our first visit a quick overnight stop on our way to Young State Park. We love finding pull-thru sites to break up a trip because our kids are young and struggle with long trips on Friday nights. More on that here… The park was so beautiful that we decided we had to come back for a longer stay! We came back for their Harvest weekend in 2017 and plan to make it a yearly tradition. They do an amazing job!!
Campsites at South Higgins Lake State Park
We camped on a pull-thru site with beautiful views of the lake on our first trip. The site was HUGE and the views were unbeatable! When we returned in the Fall we camped on the far West side of the campground. That campsite was spacious, wooded, and backed up to trees. We were able to get side-by-side sites with my parents which is tricky at other parks during Harvest Festival.
This park also offers some full hook-up sites which is really rare for a State Park. They seem to book up fast!
The Campground at South Higgins Lake State Park
This is a very large campground with 492 sites. The campground is broken up into the East and West sides. The East side of the campground is closer to the boat launch and main playground area. This side has fewer trees and many spots are full sun.
The West side of the campground is full of large trees and offers partial to full shade. This side of the park also seemed to be quieter during our stay. While this side doesn’t have the main playground area, there are swings and slides near the beach.
There is a main beach located in the middle of the campground, but also small beach areas all along the shoreline. The main concern that arises with Higgins Lake is swimmers itch. There are signs all along the beach warning swimmers. Most campers say they have never had a problem as long as you wash off really well after getting out of the water. The park offers four bathroom/shower areas so there is always an easy option nearby.
Area Surrounding South Higgins Lake State Park
South Higgins Lake State Park is located at the southern end of gorgeous Higgins Lake, noted in many publications as one of the most beautiful lakes in the world. A short drive East on county road 104 after exiting US-127 will lead you to the entrance of the park. There is a party store, gas station, and ice cream shop just outside of the park. For any essentials the Houghton Lake area is a 20-minute drive south and offers larger retail type shopping.
HARVEST FESTIVAL DETAILS
We enjoyed harvest fest weekend last year and plan to come back again this year. The park offered hayrides on both Friday and Saturday along with a tent filled with activities and games throughout the day. Smokey Bear even stop by to take photos with kids. The kids really enjoyed the trick-or-treating on Saturday evening because they could visit so many campers all close together. Our kids buckets were filled to the brim with candy. Unfortunately, they were issued a heavy “candy tax” by us because we love the Reese Peanut Butter Cups, 😉 If you’re looking for a fun fall trip this is one to check out!
