We visited Yankee Springs Recreation Area for this campground review in July, 2018. We stayed at the park one night on our way to Silver Lake Resort and Campground. This was a rare adult-only trip for us so we had a chance to explore outside the campground more than we typically do on a layover stop. If you’ve read our tips for traveling with kids, you know we love choosing a campground halfway to our destination to break up longer trips.
Our Campsite at Yankee Springs Recreation Area
We camped on site 82 right across from the boat launch and lake. It was fun to watch the boats come in and to be able to see views of the water. The site was large enough to accommodate our 34ft travel trailer but not much else. There also wasn’t much privacy between our campsite and our neighbors and that seemed to be the case for most of the campsites. If we visit again, we’d choose one of the sites on the edge of the campground backing up to a wooded area to have a bit more privacy.
The Campground at Yankee Springs Recreation Area
Yankee Springs Recreation Area’s campground is shady with lots of mature trees. Perfect for hot summer days!
The campground felt a little crowded as we drove in but once we got settled in our site it didn’t feel more crowded than a lot of other state parks we’ve visited.
The restrooms and bath house were on the newer side and well maintained.
The campground is especially great for those who camp and enjoy boating. There are campsites where you can park a boat right at your campsite! Keep in mind that if you book one of these sites you’ll likely have others accessing their boat from your campsite too. We’re not boaters but we were pretty jealous of those coming in after a day of fishing, tubing, or skiing. For those without a boat, there is a beach right in the campground and a huge grassy area to enjoy lake views.
The Area Around Yankee Springs Recreation Area
Yankee Springs Recreation Area is HUGE! There is so much to explore within the park. Since we were sans kids we went to dinner at the Gun Lake Casino for their Friday night prime rib and crab legs buffet. The dinner was delicious! We also checked out a local breakfast spot, Stickmann Baekerei the next morning before continuing on our journey. If you like good coffee and breakfast, this is a great stop. You can even grab it to-go in their drive-thru window.
